Peter was recently named the new Artistic Director of the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, New York.
As a director, Peter staged the star-studded Broadway concerts of "On
the Twentieth Century" starring Douglas Sills, Marin Mazzie, and Joanne Worley;
“Chess” at the New Amsterdam Theater, starring Josh Groban; and “Funny Girl” (also at the New
Amsterdam) starring Whoopi Goldberg, Bebe Neuwirth, & Peter Gallagher, among others. Off- Broadway directing credits include
the sold-out run of “Henry & Mudge" and "Junie B. Jones” at the Lucille Lortel Theater (nominated for two Lortel Awards including Best Musical),
and the award-winning one-man show “Rhapsody in Seth” at the Actors’
Playhouse. Other New York credits include "Two
Rooms" at the Lion Theater; "Broadway Musicals of 1953" at Town Hall; “Babes in Toyland” at Avery Fisher Hall, and the premiere
of the opera "Romulus" at the Guggenheim
Museum. Regional directing credits include "Gypsy"
starring Karen Mason at the St. Louis MUNY, "Man of LaMancha" at the Maltz-Jupiter Theatre (Carbonell Award winner for Best Director & Best Musical); Arthur Miller’s
“The Crucible” & August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson" for the Tampa Performing Arts Center, “The Santaland
Diaries” by David Sedaris for Pittsburgh’s City Theatre, and
“Kiss Me, Kate!” for the Gateway Playhouse.
As a performer, Peter has appeared on Broadway as “Lumière” in Disney’s Beauty & the
Beast, as well as the title role in The Scarlet Pimpernel at the Neil Simon
Theater, and the national tour of Jason Robert Brown’s Parade, directed by
Harold Prince. Peter has performed off-Broadway in Lyrics & Lyricists at the
92nd Street Y, Anna Karenina at the York Theatre, City Center Encores!, The Gershwin Centennial at Carnegie Hall, Valley of the Dolls, and Red Scare on Sunset by Charles Busch. Around the country, he has been seen in A Tale
of Two Cities (Helen Hayes Theatre), My Fair Lady (St. Louis MUNY), Paramour (Old Globe Theatre), Into the Woods (Muhlenberg Theatre Festival),
Sweeney Todd and Evita (Penn Centre
Stage), & The Pirates of Penzance (TheatreVirginia).
As a writer, Peter created the book for the musical "Lily" with music
& lyrics by Brooks Ashmanskas, and the script for the 2007 Drama Desk Awards. He
is currently commissioned by the Huntington Theatre in Boston to create a new musical with his writing partner, Mr. Ashmanskas.
Peter is a graduate of Northwestern University, and a member of SSDC.
